CONCEPTION

Live archaeology is a way to bring up the Past the way we know it and to present it to the modern mankind. It's purpose is to give to mankind an opportunity to touch the heritage of ancient times. It belongs not only to the Museum, but to an archeological sites, to those ancient places, where it's scientific evidence was uncovered, and where lived those ancient people, who left us this evidence of their being.
One of such places is Viking Era settlement Kaup. Kaup is unique because it is still one of the last in Europe not fully researched yet Viking settlements on the territory of Ancient Prussia (present day Kaliningrad region, Russia).

The Viking Era International Festival of Historical Reconstruction and Experimental Archaeology "Kaup" is organized for the first time this year, and it's visitors will get an unique opportunity to discover life and cultural heritage of Viking Era.
Festival prospective is creation of all-year around open air Museum of historical reconstruction in which the way of life of Kaup inhabitants will be restored and presented to the public.

The three-day festival program includes reconstruction of the battle between Kaup warriors and Scandinavian Vikings, fortress storm, military competitions; demonstration of prehistoric and medieval arts and crafts, contests for children and adults, medieval music concert and fire show.
One of the most remarkable festival events will be tournament of hosts, when warriors from different countries and places will fight for the title of the best fighting host of Kaup-2007 festival.

KAUP

Kaup (translated from Old Icelandic " trading place", "fair") is the largest trade and craft centre on Sambia region, existed from early 9-th century till 1016. Kaup population was international (basically Old Prussians and Scandinavians), they controlled trade relations at the Baltic coast. People were engaged in amber and bone processing.

So, here comes the first rule:
Only Viking Era re-enactment clubs are allowed to participate in "Kaup" festival, and only those representatives, who could live in Kaup settlement.

Time and location of the festival

August 10-12, Russia, Kaliningrad region, Zelenogradsk, 3 km from archaeologycal excavations, 30 km from Kaliningrad city.






Festival committee decided to make the festival on the territory of an old German park of Zelenogradsk resort. This summer being 100 meters from the seashore festival participants will enjoy beautiful Baltic sandy beaches and drink famous Zelenogradsk mineral water from a buviet.





SOME RULES

    1. Participants are not allowed to drink alcohol from 10am till 8pm i.e. while the festival territory is open for the public. Drunkenness, unworthy behaviour or property damage will lead to immediate turning a person out from the festival.
    2. The smoking is allowed only at the special places.
    3. All modern things should be removed or hidden. Participants are not allowed to wear watches, mobile telephones, sunglasses etc.

The festival will be open for the public from 10am till 8pm. After 8pm only participants are allowed on the festival territory.

FESTIVAL PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

    1. The applications are accepted from re-enactment clubs and groups, which can provide at least 4 warriors simultaneously. The individual applications are accepted from the musicians, jewellers, smiths, potters and other craftsmen who will demonstrate his/her art and craft during all festival.
    2. Each group should have a historical tent (suitable for Viking Era). Participants will have a possibility to spend the night in modern tents; for this purpose the camping will be nearby organised.
    3. All costumes should correspond to the certain epoch and certain region, are to be made from natural fabrics (flax, wool, silk) and without visible sewing-machine seams.
    4. The weapon and protective equipment should correspond to the epoch. Elements of protective equipment of later epochs are not allowed.
    5. Individual survey will be done for all weaponry.

FOOD

Festival organizers provide participants with food, housing, partial travel reimbursement.

HOUSING

The participants spend the night in historical tents, or in modern tents, which can be set at the special camping territory.
